Burley: Alexis Sanchez has been outstanding and Reece James has become an incredible leader

Recently, Chelsea boss Burley responded to suggestions that the team needs a new goalkeeper to replace Robert Sanchez at an event in Australia. He insisted that the 28-year-old goalkeeper performed "very well."
Sanchez moved to Chelsea from Brighton in 2023 and joined after losing his starting position under former Brighton coach De Zerbi. Although Stamford Bridge fans have repeatedly called for Sanchez to be replaced, Burley seems to have no intention of responding to these criticisms or suggestions: "Sanchez is doing very well now and Reece James has become an incredible leader."
However, this response may anger some fans, who have witnessed Sanchez's turbulent performance since joining Chelsea. Although the data shows that Sanchez is on par with other top goalkeepers in the Premier League, the data does not fully reflect the actual situation. He has only conceded 9 goals in the Premier League this season, second only to Arsenal's Raya, and tied for second with Crystal Palace's Henderson. His five clean sheets are also second only to Raya.
However, for Chelsea fans, Sanchez's poor decision-making often puts the team in trouble. For example, against Wolves last season, he dropped the ball at the feet of an opposing player instead of hitting it, resulting in a penalty for the team. A few days later, against Manchester City, he made a mistake in positioning and Haaland seized the opportunity to help Manchester City take the lead.
Sanchez's five mistakes led to goals in the 2023/24 season, tied with Ipswich's Muric and Brighton's Verbruggen for the highest number. These mistakes seemed to have continued into this season, especially when he was sent off for a foul on Mbemo in the fifth minute, which changed the course of the game and Manchester United won 2-1.
Since taking over Chelsea in May 2022, Burley has not been afraid of making controversial decisions. He has spent nearly 1.5 billion pounds on transfer fees, including more than 100 million pounds to sign Caicedo and Enzo, and prioritizes the introduction of young players to sign long-term contracts to build the team of the future.
Despite this, Chelsea's vision has seemed chaotic at times, with Burley having gone through five managers, currently Maresca. In addition, there have been a number of questionable transfers, such as the ÂŖ50 million signing of Sterling, which resulted in Tuchel being sacked after six Premier League games.
Sterling is now training alone and failed to find transfer opportunities in the summer, while Maresca is determined not to let Sterling enter the team. Although Chelsea once again had the second-highest spending in the latest summer transfer window (around ÂŖ315m) behind Liverpool, Burley suggested his spending could soon slow down as he believes Chelsea already have a squad that "can stay together for the long term".
"You're going to continue to see our team evolve and develop, and we've been bringing them together for a long time, and I'm very excited about the future." He also said that in the face of strong public opinions about his tenure, he responded this way: "Sometimes my wife and family see it differently than I do, and I just feel like there's one more person who doesn't know what they're talking about."
