Prevent pets from abandoning, France bans pet stores from selling cats and dogs from pet stores starting from 2024
Generally speaking, the pets that everyone raises are purchased or adopted in pet stores, but recently, based on the animal protection law, France will soon pass a new policy: pet stores prohibit the sale of cats and dogs.
[Paris Kyodo News] The French House of Lords passed the law amendment on animal care on the 18th with a majority vote. From the perspective of preventing animal welfare and impulsive shopping, cats and dogs are prohibited from selling in pet stores starting from 2024. President Macron will sign and implement the bill in the near future. On the subways and buses in various French cities, passengers can often be seen carrying pet cages or carrying pet bags. The little animal in the bag poked out her furry head and looked at the outside world curiously, looking very cute.
Pet feeding is very common in France. According to data released by the French Association for the Procurement of Animals, there are currently more than 60 million domestic pets in the country including dogs, cats, birds, fish, etc., and about half of the French families have at least one pet.
In order to more effectively manage domestic pets, the French government has introduced a series of regulations, especially the focus of raising pets in two types of dogs and cats. Both pets, dogs and cats must register by implanting chips. The content of the chip includes pet owner information. In addition, the owner must establish files for the pets in the hospital, apply for health cards, etc., so that the relevant departments can track whether the pets have timely vaccinated.
Although the proportion of French people keep pets is relatively high, half of French people have at least one pet. The Pet Food Industry Association pointed out that the cumulative number of pet cats and dogs raised in France is close to 22 million, but according to the animal welfare organization, there are about 100,000 abandoned animals in the local area every year.
Why are there so many cute little lives ruthlessly abandoned by their masters? Several studies have shown that moving, separation, economic problems and long-distance travel in summer are the main causes of abandonment, and among them, owners traveling in summer and being unable to take care of their pets is the most important of these reasons. Of the nearly 100,000 cats and dogs abandoned each year, nearly 40,000 are only found on travel routes.
Faced with such a situation, cat and dog lovers in the French government could no longer bear it and decided to cure the source of the problem and curb the phenomenon of abandoning cats and dogs from the link of buying and selling.
On January 27, 2021, the French National Assembly passed the proposal of the representatives of the "LREM" and the "Agir" - an amendment to "ban pet stores from selling cats and dogs"! As soon as the incident occurred, it shocked French society! If the amendment is finally adopted by the government, from 2024, pet stores in France will no longer be allowed to sell cats and dogs
