Lose to Arsenal! Nuno: Arsenal pushed West Ham into a desperate situation, and we played hard
In this round of Premier League, West Ham lost to Arsenal 0-2. After the game, West Ham coach Nuno was interviewed and talked about related topics.
How difficult was today's game?
Tough, very difficult. We expected it was a very tough game indeed. I think Arsenal has pushed us into a desperate situation. We were unable to play and run well in many parts of the game. I think we did a good job in some aspects of the game, but it was really a tough game and the homework you need to do is more on a tactical or psychological level. We need to work hard in all aspects.
Do you feel you need to make some special adjustments on the sidelines?
I think we are facing many new challenges and new situations this week, especially on the spiritual level. I think international match day will be very useful for players to get their minds down and focus on all the match aspects we have to solve.
What will you do next?
What can we do? We can spend hours discussing what we are going to do, but basically, we have seven players going to play in the national team. I wish them all the best, which is also special for them, working for their country in a new environment, in a different environment, and hope they can return healthy.
What motivates the team and makes them proud?
As I mentioned, we try to build more solidarity and understanding on the training ground through meetings between players, working to correct and improve what we are doing. From today’s game you can see the positives in both games, but it’s hard to draw conclusions and solve the problem with candidness because if you want to be candid, we are now frustrated and disappointed.
But looking back at the game, we are very organized and have a compact formation. I think we've improved on set piece defense. But there are also many negative aspects, such as we seem to lack some mobility when we are in possession. Yes, we have to face reality.
Do you have any objection to that penalty?
It happens outside the restricted area. Yes, I talked to the referee about this. He said the contact started outside the penalty area but ended inside the penalty area, so there was nothing to say.
Regarding your substitution, you replaced Freddy again, and you also talked about the young players on the team.
Yes, I will talk to you about them. I think first, everything is right. I personally have said that it is not easy to make a decision (that makes him play) and I understand. But I think we all have to understand that we need to fully understand everything we have in our roster as soon as possible. So, it's good for us, but it's also a problem, the main reason is that we'll need all the players. We will need them, and we hope that young players can bring these new things. Thanks.
You said Arsenal is a very difficult opponent. What makes them so difficult to deal with?
Because they are very good. Any details or any aspect of you… look at that team, they’ve been playing together for a long time. So this makes them very difficult to deal with because they have a fixed style of playing, a tacit understanding, they play well, and have talented players.
After international match day, our next game will be home games, which makes the away game extremely difficult. This is really, really important to us. This is a critical moment on our way forward.
Do you think one of the things we need to do is to consolidate the home court?
In the Premier League, home advantage is the foundation and we must do this. We all remember the work you did with Chris Wood in Nottingham Forest.
Do you think Phil Brooke and Wilson have this quality? Can they be directed and shaped?
players are different. That's why I keep repeating to you guys, we need to know the players very well so that we can solve the problem and tell them what we think is better for them. But first, all of this requires a deep understanding of the players and the people behind them. So, that's what we're trying to do. After that, our job is to work hard to improve and improve players.
You sent Marshall in the last two games, which obviously has great trust in him. What do you appreciate about him?
I saw his vitality in the training class. He is a good terminator with great mobility. He can identify gaps in space. He has a good sense of opportunity. Even if he is not a powerful player against a strong centre-back, he managed to finish the header.
So I think we have a situation where we can use three different forwards. Flow, Callum Wilson and Marshall. We will need them all, they are different types of players, and will give us different solutions and options to move forward.
Do they learn from each other?
Of course. Marshall is younger. I guess Marshall learned a lot from most of them, and I hope so because he is smart.
The last question, you just made it clear that the team looks good in terms of organization. Would you say you should focus more on offense now?
No, we have to work hard on all aspects. We can't do it overnight. Everything must be gradual. Everything must be based on knowledge. But what we mainly need to solve is to work hard to return to the foundation.
For me, basic football is to be organized, compact in formation, and shorten the distance between each other. All of these aspects must be in place. We have strength, we have talented players. Now we hope to work hard to find a balance between having and out of the ball. This way we can be more competitive. Very competitive. I hope so.
OK. Thank you very much.
Thank you.
