Walking the dog on a leash is the same old tune again. To paraphrase the classic line from the recently popular "Liu Cixin's Three-Body Problem": There are thousands of dogs walking, but the first one is the leash: walking the dog without a leash, and two non-motorized vehicles will cry.

Have you ever heard such words in your daily life, "Don't be afraid, this dog is so good, he never bites his hands"; "Take it out for a walk, but it is not easy to tie it up all the time"; "Oh, just walk it for a short while, our family lives upstairs, put it on it immediately".

Yes, these are common excuses made by owners who walk their dogs without leashes. Sometimes passers-by advise directly, and the dog owner may even feel aggrieved or even amused, wondering why his dog could make mistakes if he is so good. To give an inappropriate example, the owners who feel that their dogs are very well-behaved and do not need to be leashed at all in public places are like the parents who previously believed that people only turn on the computer to study and do not actually do anything else. The owner's thoughts may be out of sincerity and a feeling of control over the dog, but is the dog really that good and smart?

In early May 2019, a female owner of a Labrador retriever in Hong Kong said angrily in a group chat that because a woman in the community where she lived frequently walked her dog without a leash, her husband and her pet dog were bitten three times. The first time they took their dog to the pet park in early March, as soon as the dog entered the park, it was bitten on the head and neck by a black Tang dog (Tang dog in Cantonese refers to a local dog breed of the Chinese nation, since it is impossible to distinguish the actual dog breed, let’s call it a big black dog). The husband himself was also accidentally scratched when the two dogs were separated, but there was no accountability at that time. They just advised the hostess to keep the leash before taking the dog out next time.

The scene where the owner was injured was too scary, so I didn’t post it. The picture below shows the scene where the Labrador was bitten and went to the veterinary clinic for treatment. In order to treat the wound, the pet doctor shaved the hair around the wound into a square shape. Everyone has an idea of the size of this wound:

It was exactly the same. Three days later, the mistress of the Labrador once again saw the big black dog being taken out for a walk by the hero without a leash. When she saw the Labrador, she rushed over and bit her. Fortunately, she was pulled away immediately. This time the hostess decided not to accept the situation. During her argument with the other party, the other party showed no apology and even claimed that his dog had always been well behaved and she felt free to sue him. Finally, the hostess called the police to alert the police. With the intervention of the Public Security Bureau, the male protagonist promised to walk the dog on a leash and wear a mask. Last week, when the hostess and the old man were playing with their dog on the lawn near their house, they encountered the big black dog and the hostess again without a leash. The big black dog rushed over and bit the Labrador's ear. The old man was also bitten on both hands when he tried to stop him. When the old man raised the alarm, the hostess tried to escape with the big black dog. The experience of being bitten three times still did not arouse the black dog's mistress' regret. She has not apologized to the Labrador's mistress so far. She has been paying attention to the fact that the dog at home is so well-behaved, and there must be some problem with the Labrador that caused it to be bitten.

Accidents related to walking dogs without a leash have long been common. For example, some dogs were not leashed and frightened children; some dogs were not leashed and ran into the middle of the road and died in a car accident because they were in the blind spot of the driver's sight; they were also walking around in residential areas and fell, and the elderly asked lawyers to file lawsuits for compensation.

Since dogs going out without a leash have become the number one animal protection complaint, Taichung City promulgated last year that pets must use chains, cages or other appropriate protective measures when entering and exiting public places. Violators will be fined RMB700-3,500 yuan.

In fact, the standards for dog leashes are not only responsible for the people around you, but also for the dog and yourself. Many stray dogs are not abandoned themselves, but disappear while walking because they are not leashed. However, some dogs like to taste the smell of fallen leaves or garbage on the roadside when walking. If not stopped in time, they may eat harmful substances and cause death, not to mention the dog running onto the road. Due to the blind spot of the driver's vision, he cannot actually see a dog in the middle of the road. Many dogs fall under the wheels like this.

You can understand the mentality of pet owners who want their dogs to be happy, but for thousands of dog walks, safety comes first. Not holding the dog leash may give it temporary freedom, but a dog's life is more than ten years. Do you mean to be ruthless and let it wander outside for the next ten years? Not to mention whether some Chinese people who love to eat dog meat will be angry at this kind of dog. Therefore, please keep a leash when walking your dog, and be a good owner who is responsible for yourself, others and your dog.
